Palika Bazaar and LEL, A Story

**Note - This is a pure work of fiction, any resemblance to real life characters is a co incidence** Maaa mein nikalrahahoon, screamed an angry Music. Where are you going beta? Its only 6am and you don’t get up this early, shouted back his mother. Music had a penchant to dream, day dream, and always dream. This was different. His thoughts were vivid and wild. A cyclist himself, he held out against all odds and cycled and ran hard. He fell, helped those who were responsible for his fall, exchanged numbers with them and moved on with a smile. A persevering soul in his early 20's, he was enroute to being an Entrepreneur in Chikpete. A bevy of young girls would turn their necks while he passed them with such speed that it snapped and caused an injury. The local orthopaedic, Doctor Basavaraju, benefitted quite well by his charm. He was helpful to the needy, honked so hard and rode so fast, no cops could catch. Guyssssssss was his cat call and he screamed his lungs out to get attention. Each girl worth her marwari charm and whose name ended with a Jain, was aged 19 and above and less than 22 but in many cases also in their 30's, 40’s had a penchant for Music. He was their Adonis. It was also the reason...why he spent that 10001 in Palika Bazaar…. Having woken up and woken everyone in the house and almost being slapped hard for disturbing their sleep, music got dressed and left. He ran to majestic and with all his might got his tickets. He was off to Nizamuddin station in Delhi. LEL it was....and Payal Jain was riding. A fine young woman in her 20's payal rode a 50 kms almost every day in the by lanes of Udaipur. Sporting spandex in the city of princesses, she turned many human and animal heads at 5am. Cows paused midway being milked, the hen stopped cooing, the zamindars tilted up during their ablutions in the fields. Payal zoomed in her roadie and left a trail of fine Rajasthani Dust. He had found her in his youth wing, charitable causes unit. She cooked brilliant and fed the needy kids. She sat them on her lap and fed them each mouth and by her pretty hands. Upon seeing this , he teleported to being Ronaldo and for a moment dreamt of kicking those kids out afar and being fed himself. He was smitten. She had eyes that vibes an energy only he could understand. It was her, her lap and a ladle of daal kichdi to be fed. This was to be his aim. A Life with Payal and no more he decided that AM. They exchanged messages, they smiled, laughed and were silly. Over a video call, they smiled. Eyes met each other and they decided to be each other's BAE. A message at 2am woke him up. I'm attending LEL BAE, she said. Will you pray for me? Would you do me a sacrifice a deed? I need to finish the 1600 km, Snap came his response. I will clothe 16 impoverished kids he said , he left to Delhi and to Palika bazaaar. The rest is history as they say. He haggled with his voice so loud, they gave him 16 pairs at the cost of 30. He now wakes up each morning and dreams of being seated on her lap, being fed by her hands. Being silly, though he already is. He feeds kids on his lap, clothes the needy, stands in ration lines for the elderly. Will Payal finish 1600 kms? Will Music's prayers help her in the endeavour...? Let’s stay tuned to find out in the sequel... A Short Story by Arvind Dwarak

A Cycle , Coconut and a Dream come true

**Note - This is purely an act of fiction and all characters are imaginary ** A few years ago Govind took up cycling seriously, he was doing back to back long rides and climbs. He eventually realised yoga and stretches would help him improve and get him to do multiple brevets. He went from pillar to post, searched on Facebook , Instagram , Deccan herald classifieds allll in vain. Finally he sat in Hesaraghatta looking up to god for a solution. Visited a temple and broke a coconut . Then….. a piece of that coconut bounced , hit his head sharppp and he started bleeding.. Ayyoooooo he screamed, There was no one around except the sound of peacocks . Writhing in pain he sat dejected at how life had treated him , he almost gave up. Then suddenly he heard the Jhalak of Payals, the clinging of bangles. Someone touched his forehead with care and suddenly he saw a pretty face come from the side, the pleasant waft of jasmine flowers and her Jhumkis froze him in this stance. He stopped reacting ……he just stared at her like we all had stared at a bottle of fine Single malt post lockdown … in Amazement … a Lucid interval As if in a dream.. She said sir … you are hurt … I’ll treat you … Govind was spellbound, speechless and had a fixed gaze mesmerised.. Over the next 30 minutes he was given first aid and spoken words of care…. She suddenly got up to leave and then he said madam….. I’m GoGoGoGo vind….. She said Hi, I’m Joyce, I teach yoga ! His eyes lit up ! Waves stopped midway ., the peacocks froze in their dance ….. the temple bells started ringing in unison …. He heard Mozart’s "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" play in his mind aloud. ! Govind cried in Joy ……Joyce had arrived in his life …. Over the next few weeks she taught him Yoga …. Over the next few months he rode many a brevets …. Govind was happy , content and crying in joy every night . Joyce suddenly had to leave back to Australia … He vowed to move with her … she refused … he pursued …. They are now together …. The End… Sequel to come in time .. A Short story by... Arvind Dwarak

A Coconut, A 70 year old woman and her Luggage

A coconut, A 70 yr old woman and her Luggage. It was a Saturday noon , I was dropping off my father who was travelling to coimbatore in a double decker train to wish an ailing aunt good health . As I sent him off , I was tempted to spend a few moments noticing life pass by. The bogies has been transformed into a billboard for the hit movie Vikram. Each bogie had Kamal Hassan’s face in various emotions and the colors were vivid . A coolie animatedly dashed with the passenger behind and aghast, wondering if they would make the train ., the coolie’s neck seemed to have vertebrae made of steel carrying bags seeming many a kilos heavy . They would haggle on the fare later but the coolie did help reach coach C9 on time ! A lady in a hoarse voice kept announcing arrivals of trains in various languages and none made sense. She needs training, I thought aloud. A sense of urgency came upon me and I couldn’t explain why but I started walking away . It was hot , humid , maybe london was callign and I was hung over . I stopped to shoot a few pictures of trains in their tracks, spent more time trying to edit and post it for many a Instagram likes and a few comments of ‘Hey that’s a nice shot’, to keep my photographers ego going high for a few days. Around the corner a lady unmistakably in her 70’s gingerly walked down the flight of stairs. A bag seemingly larger than her torso rested on her head and she carried another on her hand. My suspicions proved right when I offered to help and she replied with an accent striking of a village resident , "Please Son , do take it off" . I suddenly was transported back to my gym where I felt I was clasping an Olympic barbell in my hands with fancy weights on either side . This bag which was on her head weighed a mighty 20 kilos . I know the weight I carry very well, mind you ! I carried both her bags in either hands and set her free ., she felt relieved and I was happy at that sight. We made small talk and she said she hailed from Tiptur and was visiting her children here. She carried coconuts and coconut oil from her farm as a gift to her grandchildren . Now that! Was the 20 kilo culprit ! I had to pause every hundred metres to take a breather., while she earlier had carried it nonchalantly on her neck. It brought me shame thinking of our mutual levels of fitness . Her son who's hands were full walked a few metres ahead and seemed much older than his mother who was mostly a farmer from her younger years . She said they were taking a bus and I decided to carry her bags till the bus stop. We made small talk., she asked where I was from , I said Bangalore and then she said where in Bangalore ? I said Malleshwaram . She said oh okay., come home when you visit Tiptur! I don’t know if I’d ever go to Tiptur and if I ever did, I would never know her house nor her name but the Invitation sounded warm and I responded a , “Sure I will” We continued our chit chat while we walked out the rather unpleasantly maintained railway station into an underground which leads to the bus stand . We saw many a vendors selling bags, mobile covers and footwear at a steal of a price ! I was tempted to buy but kept walking , stopping , taking a break , a breather . The Majestic bus stop is large and after much enquiry we finally found her bus. A sigh of relief ! Yes! I could take off 35 kilos off my hands . I walked up the steps of a bus decades later and found them a seat at the far back. Having settled them all , I turned to leave . There she stood in the way , locking her gaze into my eyes . She didn’t thank me , nor did she say bye . She just took a large , perfectly round coconut out of the same bag I carried. It was from her farm ., she thrust it in my hands and said here son take this. I protested and said no please give it to your children . She did'nt reply but continued staring into my eyes with a warm smile with the coconut in her hands and a heart filled with gratitude. I bowed in respect and left , taking in the life around me and wondering why her children didn’t come in a cab to receive her . Why no one knew her pains. What parents do to their children out of innocent pure love . The love that children brush off and take for granted . I walked back the same way I came , this time spotting more life around me . Transgenders were around the corner posing as escorts to earn a living . All forms of labor have dignity. Each human being is special and unique . I kept staring at the big coconut in my hands. I had received a gift out of love . The coconut now sits in my drawing room next to my God. To the lady , I wish her a pleasant stay in Bangalore . That coconut , the 70 year old woman and her luggage. Brought me a smile as I drove back home . A short story by............ Arvind Dwarak

Live in and Let Live

Easy Way In or…Out…

I have written earlier about marriage, it is now time to mention, how, many have tweaked the legal system out to make it mutually convenient for the similar Partnership.

One word says it all ….Live-In and Let Live

People have long since started living in.
It gives the added sense of freedom.
You are my woman Yes and you are my man Yes…..but I still have my space.

Somehow the definition of a marriage brings out other random obligations, like for an example to entertain parents and family.

In a live in, I guess many choose to keep it discreet that they are living in and thus entail their privacy in many ways.

This in many ways I feel is the right thing to do (pardon me you conservative thinkers!)
With living in with a partner, one gets to realize and learn many things about the other person with experience.

The joys and sorrows which turn them on.
Their moods and when not to tread their space.
The fights and how to end them.
The sharing of responsibility and splitting the bills.
The values to which each one taps their feet to.
The habits which make the moods of the house!

So there infact are more advantages to living in than a conservative person would think.
I feel all couples who have been engaged, should live in initially for a period of 6 months and see how they get along amicably…
This would be a nice Boot camp for their long lives to come..

This would lead to a more stable family and thus a farther stable society

Pandora's Box

But truly...It is how it can be best spelt out in one Short Sentence...
The City of Bangalore is to foresee a Pandora's Box of Troubles Creep out with ironically the thought of Expanding the City for Better Growth!

It is But an Ugly sight, an Eyesore, to see the Bangalore Metro being constructed on all the important roads......
The stretch of MG Road which was a nice sight has long been destroyed with the huge support pillars of Metro standing tall in the midst of it all.

Bangalore has seen an explosion in traffic after an explosion in population since a decade ago.....Growth in Infrastructure is necessary but it is being done hastily.
If good planning was executed, the city would foresee an infrastructure to last it for another 25 years ahead, compared to what is being built which has already lost its purpose.

It is not only the Metro which will be insufficient to support traffic in the future, examples of such hasty construction have been seen in the recent past.
Magic Boxes......The prefabricated materials put into place to create an underpass in less than 48 hours, the small flyover in Sankey Road.....to name a few......

The design in itself is flawed and has seen cracks and leaks within months of being built and have been shut down ever so frequently to traffic, nor has it eased traffic in any better way.

There are designs and materials available to make such structures lighter and more efficient in terms of convenience to vehicles using them.
The locations chosen for them are flawed again...........Traffic regulations and designs need to be overlooked as well.

If the authorities could use the current infrastructure.........it would cut down costs in Crores towards building anything new....
My Suggestion - Use the current railway lines which run in the city, railway stations at Malleswaram, Yeshwantpur and K.R.PURAM.......use these lines, put in new coaches and create trains to ferry people domestically...like it is being done since long in Chennai and Mumbai.

This will be so affordable, people would prefer it over their 2 and 4 wheelers.
Create new lines, so these trains could run to IT parks at ITPL and Electronic City.
This would even keep the Metro away.....

In countries abroad, the concept of a Metro has been long shelved and they use Subway Railway Systems.

What Bangalore needs is Domestic Railways to ease congestion. I doubt if Metro would serve that purpose.
And for what reason is the government taking 4 years to complete the project?
It is not like they do not have sufficient funds!! They have not chosen the right people for the contract! Overpasses over a mile long are built within 6 months in the USA.
I would disagree with anyone saying this is India and is developing.

If a country is a Nuclear Superpower and has its own space probe being launched to the moon, it sure can build a world class Infrastructure within its cities.

India seems to be going in the past into obsolescence in Infrastructure design than looking into the future.

Marriage - Epitome to the Union of Souls? Nah....

Let me firstly clear the fact that, I DO respect Wedlock., for how else could we all have sprung up to legally survive in this Wonderful World that we call home!

However that coining of a relationship has had its jolts ever since it came into being.

Submission, sacrifice, sensitivity have all been a negative offing from such a definition.

It seems to be the 'Perfect Ending towards a New Beginning' for all..

As ironical as the above line sounds, how else do u define falling in love with that one person and confirming it thru "The Holy matrimonial"

I personally have had many friends enter Holy union in the recent past and soon seem stressed, pressed for space, whine over the fat money they made which seemed to disappear sooner than the beer they downed over evenings.
Yet, there are a few who are content to the new reason in their life.. and Yet seem stressed!!!

Is it the culture today I wonder that has changed things or has it been this way long before I could start thinking wise…
I’m sure it’s the latter.

Relationships between a couple in Wedlock seemed pretty stable and taken for granted in weddings which occurred 30 years ago....but recently it has sought a more demanding / jeopardizing attention from the persons involved in it.

Could it be changes in Earning power or Changes in lifestyles that earning power brings about?

I believe it is the changes in lifestyles that Earning power bringeth forward in modern times.

Like they say, money is the evil of all sins, or was it me who coined that cliché as I type now,
Well it truly is……..

Let me speak on India for starters
As long ago to how far my memory goes, Marriages had Dowries as a foundation to begin with.,
Isn’t here where the man lost all his respect? Why would he need to be paid to love someone?

The bride and her family took it for granted that they would have to foot a deposit for a long term loan.
See… didn’t I mention that money ruins it all…

With dowry becoming illegal over time, the brides who eventually got married really thought the chap was taking her into his life since he really loved her., seldom would she know that as she continued to work after the union, she’d have to pay half her salary to pay off his lavishness!!
Trust me - I have come across such stories

In today’s age where every young man/woman in the ripe age is ready for the union, they mostly know what they’re getting into but still continue to not be able to handle it well when they are into it.

There are many ways one could argue as to why a relationship doesn’t stay stable.

But lets get back to the subject of this write up really.
Is marriage really a perfect ending to a new beginning.
"Why cant people just love each other, live with each other and walk away when they’re bored"?
Did I just shock you all??

Peep within yourself. I’m sure you have this thought in your deepest darkest desires..
Many of us tend to not respect our deepest wants since it brings forward an intimidation of us beginning to have immoral thoughts and then we slap ourselves on the face and say ‘Hey what was I thinking’

No, don’t mistake me here, I do respect wedlock as I quoted in the very beginning.
But I sometimes find it funny to see my friends groan over it.

Why! Just last week a few otherwise bold men had shaky legs when the clock cooed 11:00 pm and they realized their wives were awaiting their drunken and smoked presence a little too late than promised…. It was the following day I heard stories of how these bold men eventually pleaded guilty to their sins on the crime scene the previous night and had to coax their way out to getting a clean slate again!!

Took a few bars of chocolates and promises of dinners I heard ;)

This I have not seen in relationships, where the couple are defined as a boyfriend and a girlfriend, there is certainly more space in that bond.

There also are many perceptions to marriage in itself . You can read stories of married couples being ok with each other flirting away or worse being involved with someone else. It just seems so casual.

Changes in Lifestyles are a spoiler
Cinema and Television does bend the mind a little., what with all those silly serials on TV showing immoral themes, couples today even have wild parties where they swap each other.
For others it would be taboo.

But again, “we are all individuals and we have our Unique perception on leading life.”

As one of my friends rightly said, Marriage is a union in which, each of the couple need to work on the relationship everyday and be sensitive to other’s feelings…….I believe she’s very true.

Don’t tread on each other’s personal lives would be my advice.
Trust each other, it doesn’t really work otherwise.
Remember – You don’t own the other person!!

Well at the end of it all...I think it was god’s will to just have people pronounce legality in the bond and have legal offspring’s towards a stable little world we call home :-)

So what with all this, how does one really define the Union?
The Argument is never ending.

Bangalore - Fading Sadly with Time..

As a Loyal Bangalorean, who's grown up his entire life in the city, Im Pretty Chauvinistic about wanting to fend off the ever raising complains on the city!

Give it a break! It's Just like every other city in India!

Traffic they say and muse over is Horrible., its on everybody's lips really.

The Roads are small, potholes everywhere, autos driving recklessly, motorists riding on footpaths meant for pedestrians, call centre cabs driving to kill people, not to mention the Bus almost running over you as u try to cross the streets...

To all those of you who complain. Answer my question - Which other city in India have you found better in all those respects you have complained above so far?
I dont think you have an answer really.

To firstly surmise what this great city has to offer and latter justify how it all went wrong..

Bangalore was considered a Pensioners Paradise.
Ever so green with the 1000's of trees littered all over, my town has an weather to it akin to any Hill Station.
Its ever so pleasant with comfortable weather all round the year, occasional rains, sunny days and cool breezy nights.
Perfect for couples to coochie coo away with a nice glass of wine.

Bangalore has the distinction of being a friendly city with a cosmopolitan populace.
A Large English speaking society since we have a good history of the British Raj having set an important post here., many Anglo Indians set base here too.

Great colleges and Churches have a nice history behind them.

Bangalore has the largest number of watering holes (Pubs and Bars) within One city compared to any other in any corner of the world if my facts have'nt been
manipulated over time.

Was really a quite peaceful town until the late 90's when the S.M.Krishna Government chose to litter the town with 10's of Engineering colleges all over and we had students creeping in from the entire country since they needed to only pay to get a nice seat!!!!......Thus started the trouble.

I personally have nothing against anyone coming in from other parts to settle in the city, If u heard me wrong..But Iam just going about a justification of why the city has changed to what it is being complained about today.

Since bangalore boasts of students who come out with Great skilled Degrees and speak flawlessly wonderful English, the IT outsourcing cast its commencial eyes and thus mushroomed the growth of Call Centres / BPO's and also Highly demanding IT jobs.

People in just about every field of study and work received great oppurtunites in these MNC's

Communications, Coding, Service Desk, Law, Medical Transcription, Insurance........U Name it!! The jobs came down outsourced and everyone almost found oppurtunities which fetched them great amounts of good money!

Bangalore never saw such a metamorphism in the job and salary market.

No One would even mind the odd hours at work which caused them a great deal of health digress.

Evetually this led to the Great Banks coming over with Easy Auto Loans.

Manufacture in the Automobile industry shot up and we had a new model every quarter from every other Car maker., coupled with Easy Loans and a emerging Pre Owned Automobile market, the rest is for anyone to guess.......

Traffic piled up in Hundreds.......

Why really blame another ordinary city in india which in its Infrastructure is Just like any other ordinary city in india.
People blame the government, but tell me One govenrment in any other states which has done anything better!

We just love earning our Fat salaries this city and its companies have to offer, spending a couple of thousands on a pretty girl in those fancy clubs over the weekends and dining out in one of the dime a dozen fancy multi cuisine restaurants popped up all over the city...The point is we love doing just what I mentioned a 100 words
behind, bangalore is unique for its nighlife despite the early closure hours.

Then....Why dont we just accept that fact that., This is just another little town in our country which is smaller in Land area compared to Chennai and Mumbai or Calcutta and Delhi , just that we'r hardpressed for space and we just have toooo many people from all other parts come in to make a nice living...SO Stop Complaining!!

There's nothing me or you or the thousands of tax payers out there could do to change anything about anything we complain on, because .....nothing will change :-)

Let me not leave you dissapointed but suggest something at the end of this all.
Try carpooling and sharing bike rides if you and your collegues live in the same neighbourhood.
I wont suggest public transport since its nothing great to ride in.

Stop honking! I know the clubs shut at 23:00 and your trying to get in early. Its really ok, you can go home and drink for free than pay 300 for a bacardi.
Try and drive on lanes, though there are none., it helps promote some sense of discipline!

And Last but certainly not the least, litter only in the litter bins.
Will you still stop complaining ?
I Certainly hope so :-)

Arvind Dwarakanath.
